Ph. D Program in History
The Ph.D. Program in History provides advanced training in historical research, critical analysis, and academic writing. Designed for individuals pursuing careers in academia, public history, and research institutions, the program emphasizes original scholarship across a broad range of historical periods and themes.
Students develop specialized expertise through a combination of advanced coursework, comprehensive examinations, language preparation (as needed), and the completion of a dissertation based on original primary-source research.

Specialization Areas in History
The Ph.D. Program in History offers a wide range of specialization areas that reflect the diversity and depth of the historical discipline. Chronological fields include Ancient History, Medieval History, Early Modern History, Modern History, and Contemporary History. Geographical fields of study encompass African History; American History, including Colonial, 19th-Century, and Modern U.S. history; East Asian History (focusing on China, Japan, and Korea); South Asian History; European History (covering Western, Eastern, Central, and Southern Europe); Latin American and Caribbean History; Middle Eastern History; Southeast Asian History; Russian and Eurasian History; as well as Global and Transnational History.
In addition, the program supports a broad array of thematic and methodological specializations. These include Cultural History, Political History, Social History, Economic and Labor History, Intellectual History, and Religious History. Students may also focus on Urban History, Environmental History, the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine, as well as Gender and Sexuality History, and Race and Ethnicity Studies. Other areas include Colonialism and Postcolonial Studies, Migration and Diaspora Studies, Military and Diplomatic History, Legal and Constitutional History, and Public History and Memory Studies. Admission Eligibility
Master’s Degree Holders
- Completed a 1-year/2-semester master’s degree after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree, or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree after a 3-year bachelor’s degree, or equivalent qualifications, with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade.
- Equivalent qualifications from accredited foreign institutions are accepted.
- A 5% mark relaxation may apply for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer), Differently-Abled, EWS, and other categories as per regulatory decisions.
4 Year Bachelor’s Degree Holders
- Completed a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree with at least 75% marks or equivalent grade.
- A 5% mark relaxation may apply for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer), Differently-Abled, EWS, and other categories as per regulatory decisions.
M.Phil. Holders
- Completed an M.Phil. program with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade, or an equivalent qualification from an accredited foreign institution.
