Ph.D. Program in Geography
The Ph.D. in Geography is a research-based degree that helps students become experts in studying the Earth and how people interact with it. This program trains students to do original research that can help solve real-world problems.
Graduates can work in universities, government offices, or private companies. The program usually takes 3 to 6 years to complete and includes:

Specialization Areas
Students can choose to focus on one or more of the following areas:
Human Geography– how people live, work, and interact with their environment
Population Geography- how populations are spread across regions (urban vs. rural, core vs. periphery). Focus on physical (climate, topography) and human (economic, political) determinants of distribution.
Physical Geography – natural features like rivers, mountains, and climate
GIS and Remote Sensing – using technology and satellite images to study the Earth
Environmental Geography – how humans affect the environment and vice versa
Urban and Regional Planning – designing and improving cities and regions
Climate Change and Sustainability – studying climate issues and how to protect the planet
Political Ecology – how politics and environment are connected

Admission Eligibility
Candidates meeting the following qualifications are eligible for admission to the PhD program, as per the UGC Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of PhD Degree Regulations, 2022 (No. F. 1-3/2021(QIP), New Delhi, 7th November 2022).
4 Year Bachelor’s Degree Holders
- Completed a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree with at least 75% marks or equivalent grade.
- A 5% mark relaxation may apply for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer), Differently-Abled, EWS, and other categories as per regulatory decisions.
Master’s Degree Holders
- Completed a 1-year/2-semester master’s degree after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree, or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree after a 3-year bachelor’s degree, or equivalent qualifications, with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade.
- Equivalent qualifications from accredited foreign institutions are accepted.
- A 5% mark relaxation may apply for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer), Differently-Abled, EWS, and other categories as per regulatory decisions.
M.Phil. Holders
- Completed an M.Phil. program with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade, or an equivalent qualification from an accredited foreign institution.
- A 5% mark relaxation may apply for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer), Differently-Abled, EWS, and other categories as per regulatory decisions.
